Todd Hayen is a registered psychotherapist, author, and former film composer based in Toronto, Canada. What is a Shrew? Good question. We all know the shrew animal, that tiny, twitchy little beast no bigger than your thumb, scurrying through the underbrush like it owns the place. Don’t let the size fool you. Shrews are absolute terrors in fur coats—ferocious, high-metabolism assassins with a bite that can take down prey twice their size. They’re wily, relentless, and famously bad-tempered; legend has it they’ll nip the nose of an angry dog just to make a point. Small but mighty, they slice through the noise with razor-sharp instincts while the rest of the forest pretends everything’s fine.
That’s exactly why I borrowed the name for Shrew Views and my book The View of the Shrew: Unmasking the Truth in a Confused World.
In the pages of the book (and on this site), a “shrew” is you—the sharp-eyed, no-nonsense critical thinker who refuses to graze mindlessly with the flock. While the “sheep” (you know the type) happily follow the latest official narrative, swallowing every headline and booster without question, the shrew stops, sniffs the air, and says, “Wait… that smells like bullshit.”
We’re the ones who notice when the pot is slowly coming to a boil. The ones who dare to peek behind the curtain of fear, propaganda, and groupthink. Small in number? Maybe. But like our furry namesake, we’re viciously effective at nipping bad ideas right in the snout. We pierce the veil of illusion, call out the nonsense, and refuse to be herded into compliance.
Shrew Views (the substack) and this site (the book) are our den—a gathering place for the pack of truth-seeking rebels who value curiosity over comfort, evidence over dogma, and sanity over the latest flavour of mass psychosis. So if you’re here, congratulations: you’re officially one of us.
